The teen years are an ideal time to straighten teeth. Teenagers have almost all of their permanent teeth, and repositioning them at this time is usually easier than it can be later on.
However, most teens dread the thought of having a mouthful of metal, which is part of the deal with traditional braces. This is where Invisalign® comes in. Invisalign aligners fix most orthodontic issues and are nearly invisible.
At Brooklyn City Dental in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City, our providers are experts in providing Invisalign to teens and adults. In this blog, they explain how the treatment works and some of its many benefits.
Invisalign is similar to traditional braces in that the system uses applied force to make incremental changes in tooth positioning and bite alignment until your teen’s smile is just right. However, with this system, the aligners are removable and nearly invisible.
To begin treatment, your teen's provider first scans their mouth with specialized computer software, which maps out every step of their alignment plan. Then, based on this information, your teen’s series of aligners is made.
Each set in the series is slightly different, and when your teen puts in a set, it moves their teeth slightly. Every time they put in a new set — which is usually every 1-2 weeks — their teeth move closer to the goal, and by the time they take out their last set, they have the smile they desire.
With Invisalign, your teen can correct a number of orthodontic issues, such as the following:
This list is not comprehensive, so if your teen has a condition not listed here, ask our providers if Invisalign can help.
While Invisalign aligners are removable, your teen will need to wear them for at least 22 hours a day to stay on schedule. And, as mentioned, your teen will need to replace their aligners with the next ones in the series every 1-2 weeks, depending on their overall treatment plan.
To help teens stay on track, the Invisalign team has recently developed a compliance indicator, which is a small blue dot on the aligner that changes color when your teen needs to progress to the next aligner.
Invisalign improves on the experience of having braces in several ways, many of which are important to teens and tweens. These include the following:
