Teeth Whitening Q & A

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment that uses medical-grade solutions to remove stains from the surface of your teeth. There are many types of teeth whitening treatment; Brooklyn City Dental uses Philips Zoom!.

Philips Zoom! is an in-office whitening procedure that uses a combination of hydrogen peroxide gel and laser energy to transform your smile. The process is quick, pain-free, and presents no risk of side effects.

What causes teeth to change color?

Most people experience yellow or discolored teeth due to the natural aging process. Over the years, your tooth enamel wears down, revealing the yellow dentin underneath.

Other factors that cause the teeth to change color include:

  • Using tobacco
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Taking medication with tetracycline
  • Drinking dark beverages like coffee, cola, or red wine
  • Eating foods that stain like berries or tomato-based sauces

You might also develop yellow or discolored teeth as a result of oral trauma.

What does teeth whitening involve?

At Brooklyn City Dental, teeth whitening is an outpatient procedure that typically takes less than an hour.

Before whitening your teeth, your provider covers your gums and tongue with a protective dam. Then, they carefully apply a hydrogen peroxide gel solution to each of your teeth. After the solution sits for 15-20 minutes, your provider points a special light at your teeth.

The light emits laser energy that causes the whitening gel to heat up and penetrate your enamel. As the gel penetrates your enamel, it oxidizes the dark molecules within, making your teeth lighter.

Your provider repeats these same steps a number of times until you’re pleased with the results. At the end of treatment, Brooklyn City Dental sends you home with care instructions.

How long does teeth whitening last?

The results of teeth whitening aren’t permanent, but they last an average of between 4-6 months. To ensure your smile remains vibrant and bright, Brooklyn Dental Spa recommends:

  • Quitting tobacco use
  • Brushing your teeth twice daily
  • Flossing before going to bed at night
  • Drinking dark beverages from a straw
  • Visiting the dentist at least two times a year
