Teeth Whitening Q & A

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dentistry procedure that safely removes stains, restoring your smile to a brilliant, white condition.

The majority of whitening products currently on the market, including Philips Zoom!, use carbamide peroxide as their main ingredient. Carbamide peroxide is completely harmless and provides long-lasting results.

Why do teeth change color?

As you get older, your teeth naturally change color. Activities like biting and chewing wear down your enamel, exposing the yellow dentin beneath. Light reflects off the dentin, making your teeth appear discolored and dingy.

Other factors that cause tooth discoloration include:

  • Oral trauma
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Taking medication with tetracycline
  • Using tobacco

The foods and beverages that you consume also affect the color of your teeth. If you eat tomato-based foods like curries and pasta sauce or regularly drink dark beverages with tannins like coffee and red wine, your tooth enamel may lose its luster.

What does teeth whitening involve?

At Brooklyn City Dental, the team performs teeth whitening on-site using Philips Zoom!. Studies show that just one treatment session can make your teeth up to eight* shades brighter.

At the beginning of your appointment, the team covers your tongue and gums with a protective rubber dam. Then, they carefully apply a bleaching solution to each of your teeth.

Following application, the solution rests for about 15 minutes. Next, the team points a special light at your teeth that triggers a whitening reaction. They repeat the same steps two more times until you’ve achieved the desired shade of white. Most teeth whitening appointments take an hour or less.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Teeth whitening is safe and typically well-tolerated. Following your appointment, it’s normal to experience some increased tooth sensitivity, but any discomfort should subside within 24-48 hours.

Does teeth whitening last forever?

The results of teeth whitening aren’t permanent, but they usually last between four and six months.

If you want to extend the results, it’s important to practice good oral hygiene. The team recommends brushing twice daily, flossing regularly, and drinking beverages like coffee or tea through a straw.

In addition, visit Brooklyn City Dental at least twice a year for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.
