Tooth extractions are a common dental procedure used to remove one or several permanent teeth.
Even though your teeth are meant to last your entire life, that isn’t always possible. Without intervention, certain oral health problems like extensive decay, infection, or crowding can increase the risk of more serious issues.
At Brooklyn City Dental, the team has years of experience performing tooth extractions. Their knowledge and expertise ensure minimal discomfort and quality patient outcomes.
Before recommending tooth extractions, the team at Brooklyn City Dental conducts an oral exam, asks about your symptoms, and reviews your dental health history. Then, they take oral X-rays to determine the condition of your affected tooth or teeth.
Let the team know if you have an underlying medical condition like a congenital heart defect, liver disease, or high blood pressure. It’s important that these conditions are stable prior to undergoing treatment.
In addition, let the team know if you take any prescription medication. Certain drugs can interfere with anesthesia, increasing the risk of complications.
At Brooklyn City Dental, the team offers two types of tooth extractions:
If your affected tooth is above the gum line, the team performs a simple extraction. Prior to treatment, they administer a local anesthetic to numb your mouth, ensuring your comfort. Once the anesthesia sets in, they loosen your tooth with a tool called an elevator and gently remove it with forceps.
If you have an impacted tooth that’s below the gum line, the team performs a surgical extraction. Before treatment begins, your provider administers a local anesthetic to numb your mouth. Once you’re comfortable, they access the tooth beneath your gum line and remove it.
Following your tooth extractions, the team sends you home with a list of recovery instructions. For the first 24-48 hours, get plenty of rest and eat only soft foods like mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, or soup. Drink plenty of fluids but avoid using a straw. Consuming beverages that way can slow the healing process and result in a painful condition called a dry socket.
Continue to brush and floss as you normally would, but be very careful around the extraction site. If the team gives you antibiotics, make sure to take them as prescribed.
