Can I Still Get Invisalign if I’ve Had Previous Dental Work?

As you get older, your smile can change with time. You may need fillings, crowns, or dental bridges to replace lost permanent teeth. You may even choose to improve your smile with cosmetic treatments  like veneers. But what happens when you’ve had dental work and would like to straighten your smile with the help of Invisalign? Here’s what you need to know about using aligners when you’ve had dental restorations.

Who is a Good Candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign is an amazing alternative to traditional braces. It works by using clear aligners that fit over the teeth to gently move them into a better position, and is ideal for those who have crowding, small gaps, or a variety of bite issues.

Invisalign is recommended for mature teens and adults who are willing to properly care for their teeth during treatment. Because the clear trays are removable for meals, you’ll need to brush and floss them each time you eat or drink anything other than water, so it’s important that you’re committed to protecting yourself from cavities and gum disease during treatment.

Can I Still Get Invisalign if I Have Dental Restorations?

Dental restorations can sometimes complicate Invisalign treatment, but they will not automatically disqualify you. During your consultation, your dentist will examine your teeth and gums, and if you are not a good candidate for Invisalign it is possible you may still be able to get traditional braces. However, in many cases dental work should not affect your Invisalign treatment at all, or your plan can be adjusted to accommodate them, such as by adding “buttons” or other refinements to help your teeth move in the right direction despite previous restorations.

How to Make Your Invisalign Treatment a Success with Dental Restorations

If you do have existing dental restorations prior to Invisalign treatment, be sure to follow your treatment plan as closely as possible. If you are prescribed things like rubber bands or other refinements, wear them as prescribed, as this will help ensure your results stay on track and your smile improves on schedule. Furthermore, be very diligent about caring for your teeth and gums during treatment, as this will help prevent the need for new dental restorations that could alter your timeline and require modifications to your trays. You can do this by always removing your aligners to eat and drink anything besides water, and by thoroughly brushing and flossing before putting them back in your mouth. Also, be sure to keep up with your regular Invisalign check-ins as well as your preventive dental exams and cleanings.

Remember, existing dental work won’t automatically disqualify you from Invisalign, but it could make treatment look a little different. To see if you’re a good candidate for clear aligners, schedule a consultation with your dentist today!
